"I live in Schaumburg and had heard many good things about Alden Poplar Creek, so when I needed rehabilitation on my foot, my family and I decided to come here. The Therapy Department is excellent. Everyone in Therapy has worked very hard with me, and it has paid off so much. One of the biggest benefits to me is that I will now continue to exercise at home, something I never did before. The Nursing staff is wonderful too, and it is great to see the camaraderie among the staff. Everyone is friendly and helpful and always has a smile on their face. The Housekeeping staff outdoes themselves and keeps our rooms clean and odor free. I look forward to going home soon, but I am grateful for everything everyone has done at Alden Poplar Creek to help in my recovery."

"I am celebrating my 60th Wedding Anniversary and have lived here at Alden Poplar Creek since April 2004. My husband George also resides here with me, which is nice. I really enjoy my room, as it is bright and cheerful, and my window provides me with lots of light. I like the people, activities and the outings offered at Alden Poplar Creek. We have a bus that takes us to luncheons and shopping excursions – I really enjoy being out and about. I helped at the red-carpet dedication of the Pathways/Alzheimer’s Dementia Unit and wore my very best gown for this wonderful occasion, while my husband wore a tuxedo! One of my favorite things is Alden Poplar Creek’s Annual Halloween Adventure, when I hand out candy to all of the little children! My daughter lives close by, and I have many friends who come to visit with me. I am very happy here."

"I originally came from Austria but most recently lived in nearby Streamwood. I came to Alden Poplar Creek for short-term rehabilitation, and I have found both the nursing and rehabilitation staff here very helpful and friendly. In fact, the certified nursing assistants are SUPER!!!! I wondered how the food would be, but I have found it is great and tasty, which has been a pleasant surprise – although we get served way too much. I receive very good care here, and I am happy with everything."

Families

"I want to thank you for all of your help with Mom. So many people at Alden Poplar Creek were very close to Mom and took great care of her. The Family Hospice staff were amazing. Everyone at Alden was wonderful. Mom couldn’t have been in a more caring place. Rose even sang to her as she was passing. I’m not sure how to ever fully say thank you for what you did for our family, but thank you."

"My mother’s orthopedic doctor recommended she have therapy at Alden Poplar Creek. My mother has been very responsive to the therapists who have been assisting her. The level of comfort the therapists have given her is very good. She feels, as I do, that she has been given very good care here at Alden Poplar Creek."

"In the past 12 years, my brother and I watched our mother slowly lose herself to Alzheimer’s disease. When it became apparent more than three years ago that I could not care for her much longer, we did the necessary research to find a suitable facility that could care for Mom in the best way possible. That’s when we found Alden Poplar Creek. Mom did very well for the first 18 months at Alden. Because she loved to go out, we took her out to church, restaurants, the hair dresser and other places, and she was even able to participate in the organized activities offered at the facility. One event in particular stands out in my memory, which was Alden Poplar Creek’s Senior Prom. It was a very special event held off-site for residents and their family members. The event featured a DJ, dance floor, King and Queen, photographer, and of course, a delicious meal. It was a wonderful Sunday afternoon.

Mom 'came to life' at the Prom. She was more like 'herself' than I had seen in a long time. She danced with me, sang the old songs and clapped her hands, thoroughly enjoying the music and surroundings. The photographer provided us with pictures that will always help us to remember the 'Mom we’d known most of our lives.' The Alden Poplar Creek nursing staff, who came to assist the residents, were all dressed up too and had so much fun. What a caring group!

Months later, Mom began receiving hospice services. The nursing staff helped every step of the way through the whole transition, and I can’t express enough how wonderful and caring the nurses and aides are on the Pathways/Alzheimer’s Dementia Care Unit.

We will always be grateful for those good times we had with Mom while she called Alden Poplar Creek her home."

"My dad spent a year at Alden Poplar Creek before he passed away. During his stay, he received exceptional care from the nurses and the certified nursing assistants. He really enjoyed the friendly, fun-loving staff who made him laugh and feel so welcome. My wife and I are still impressed with the beautiful facility, the variety of activities and the delicious food. We made the right decision when we chose Alden and enjoy returning to the facility to help at special events. It is such a good feeling to visit with the staff, patients and residents – we feel like part of the family."

"I came to Alden Poplar Creek in 1979, never having worked in long term care. I had just lost my mother at only 56 years of age. As you can imagine, the loss was a shock to all of us, and I was not sure if working around those who needed care would be a good idea or not. I found that my previous job working as a cook at my son’s high school was absolutely different than getting patients and residents at Alden Poplar Creek to eat their meals. High school students eat everything, while older adults are much more finicky. Over the years, I have found that my patients and residents need me as much as I need them. I enjoy helping orient new nurses’ aides to our staff and making them feel welcome and comfortable. I try and take the nervousness out of them."

"My first experience with Alden Poplar Creek was in 1993 when my mother needed rehabilitation after a hospital stay. She was admitted and stayed after rehab as a resident until 1994 when she passed away. In October 2001, nine years after mom passed away, my husband had a stroke. Once again, we chose Alden Poplar Creek for his rehabilitation. I spent many hours and days here and got to know everyone quite well. I watched the rehab staff and the care the nurses and nursing aides gave my husband, and I was very impressed. When my husband passed away in August 2002, I became part of the Alden Poplar Creek family. It was at the encouragement of the staff that I applied and was hired to work in the Activity Department. After a short time, I was promoted to Social Services Director and then asked to assume my current position as Personnel Director. I am still impressed by the staff and the hard work they do each day to help our patients and residents. And, I am grateful to Sherry, my Administrator, for the opportunity she has given me to grow here at Alden Poplar Creek and become part of this wonderful family."

"I love working at Alden Poplar Creek, as we have a great team of managers. It’s unusual when all members of a team get along, but that is what we have here. Not only do we work well together, but we also have become friends and know each other’s families. I have great compassion for my patients and residents, and I take personal pride in providing them with the best activities I can. I spoil them by shopping for them, sewing on buttons, listening to them when they need it and celebrating with them. I have spent time with many families, and I am happy to say that several have become volunteers over the years, helping with special events. My staff and I have fun going on outings such as shopping trips, luncheons, musicals and plays and planning on-site activities, including the Ladies/Men’s Lunch, The Do Nothing Club, Big Screen movies and socials. The patients and residents see all of us in the Activity Department as friends and we see them in the same way."

"I was baking Christmas cookies one winter and decided to take a break and read the newspaper. That is when I saw an ad for a Receptionist at Alden Poplar Creek. I decided to run over and fill out an application. When I turned in my application, the Admission Director asked if I would mind staying for an interview. After we spoke a while, she told me that they were interviewing all week, and she would call me at the end of the week with a decision. As she promised, she called me at the end of the week and told me I was hired. I really just wanted to work through the winter season and here I am 18 ½ years later – it has certainly been a long winter! Once I joined Alden Poplar Creek, I couldn’t leave. I like the people I work with, the patients and residents and their families. They are all my extended family."

Community Members

"Alden Poplar Creek is a real asset to the Hoffman Estates community. Not only does the facility provide excellent care to its residents, but it has gone ‘the extra mile’ to provide cutting-edge care on its Alzheimer’s/Dementia Unit. Additionally, Alden Poplar Creek works well with residents’ family members and community leaders to provide the additional benefits and activities that keep it a step ahead of its contemporaries.

Alden Poplar Creek is a vital part of the Hoffman Estates business community by partnering with the local Chamber of Commerce to facilitate meetings and sponsor community activities, including the Community Fishing Derby and annual Mayor’s Update Breakfast. In that community spirit, one of the local Boy Scout Troops made planters for the facility’s patio as one of their community service projects."

"On behalf of the Schaumburg Township District Library, I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Alden Poplar Creek community. We have collaborated on a number of activities such as delivering books and films to patients and residents and providing bi-focal kits and CDs.

My role as an Advisory Board Member has been most rewarding, especially when I helped coordinate the 'Senior Prom' and provided ‘movie stars’ for the event – I still have my picture with John Wayne! Our latest Circus was also a lot of fun, which showed me once again how especially caring the staff is with each patient and resident. They made sure everyone was included in all of the activities and did so very lovingly. It is truly impressive.

I am also a member of the Hoffman Estates Senior Commission, and each year, in September, we come to Alden Poplar Creek for cookies and bingo. The Activity Director and other staff at Alden Poplar Creek make sure each of the patients and residents has a good time and that everyone receives a gift. Our Commission feels truly blessed after our visit.

I commend the Administrator, Sherry, who has listened to the Advisory Board and the staff, to continually improve the patients’ and residents’ quality of care and quality of life over the years. It has been an honor to be part of such growth."

"Being a member of Alden Poplar Creek’s Advisory Board, I find Alden is able to progress on their own two feet. Proud to be part of this organization, I have seen Alden's employees working hard to help their patients and residents. Residents seem to feel safe and secure thanks to their wonderful caregivers."
